In Loving Memory of Comrade Lucy Ciru: A Passionate Fighter for Social Justice

On Thursday, Kenya lost a remarkable compatriot, Comrade Lucy Ciru. With a heavy heart, I pen this tribute to honor her memory and celebrate her tireless efforts as a social justice activist. She was a revolutionary socialist who dedicated her life to fighting for the rights of the marginalized. Despite her own struggles, she never hesitated to join study cells, protests, and campaigns to create a better society. She stood up against the high cost of living, extrajudicial killings, and oppressive taxation laws imposed by the Kenyan government. Her unwavering commitment and selflessness inspired not only me but also countless others in our pursuit of human dignity.

Comrade Lucy Ciru was an illustrious member of the Kiamaiko Community Social Justice Center, where she tirelessly volunteered to address social inequality and champion the cause of the marginalized. She believed in the power of collective action and dedicated herself to improving the lives of those living in Kiamaiko within Mathare, one of Nairobi's informal settlements. In the face of daunting challenges, Lucy stood tall and resolute, she always found time to participate in study cells at the Mathare Social Justice Center, deepening her understanding of social issues and expanding her knowledge to better serve her community.

In her fight against injustice, Comrade Ciru never shied away from the frontlines. She was an integral part of the NJAARevolution Campaign, a movement that sought to challenge the oppressive systems and structures that perpetuated inequality in Kenya. Even while battling illness, she displayed incredible resilience and determination, showing up at every street protest against the high cost of living and extrajudicial killings. Her personal experiences, having lost close family members to trigger-happy rogue police officers, fueled her passion for change and intensified her resolve to seek justice.

Lucy's impact extended far beyond her activism; she was also a friend and a source of inspiration. In moments of exhaustion and doubt, Lucy's unwavering dedication motivated those around her to continue the pursuit of human dignity. Her resilience, even in the face of personal illness, was a testament to her commitment to the cause. Lucy believed that the fight for social justice was never in vain and encouraged others to persist, reminding us that our collective efforts had the power to create lasting change.

One of the fondest memories I have of Comrade  Ciru is during the Sita Sita protest against the Finance Bill 2023. When I was unjustly arrested, she stood by my side without hesitation. Instead of leaving for home, she camped at the Central Police Station until our release. Her unwavering support and solidarity were a testament to her character and unwavering commitment to the cause. After our release, we shared a meal together, unaware that it would be our last. Little did we know that fate had other plans, taking her away from us far too soon,
her passing leaves a void in our hearts and in the struggle for social justice. Her legacy, however, will continue to inspire us. She showed us the importance of standing up for what we believe in, even in the face of adversity. Her dedication, courage, and compassion were unwavering, and her impact on the lives of those she touched will never be forgotten.

Comrade Ciru was more than just a comrade; she was a beacon of hope and a symbol of resilience. Her passion for social justice, her tireless activism, and her unwavering commitment to the betterment of society were a constant source of inspiration. Although her life was cut short, her memory will continue to guide us in our ongoing struggle for a more just and equitable world.

We honor her by carrying forward the torch she lit, working towards the ideals she held dear, her legacy will forever live on in the hearts and minds of those who knew her. Her passion, dedication, and unwavering commitment to social justice will continue to inspire future generations. She has left an indelible mark on our movement, reminding us to never tire in the pursuit of human dignity.

As we reflect on that bittersweet memory, we are reminded of the fleeting nature of life and the importance of cherishing the moments we have with loved ones

Rest in power, dear comrade Lucy Ciru. Your spirit will forever live on in our hearts.
